To teach my children about music, I tried out the Magic Moves RainbowJam product from Educational Insights. Music education is important to kids’ development. As a certified teacher, I realize that some schools are phasing out music education, which gives parents the responsibility to educate their children about music. I considered two main factors when writing my review. First, I thought about the item’s educational value. Next, I examined whether the product also had entertainment value to keep kids engaged. Although there were some functions I liked better than others on the item, overall, the toy was well worth my kids’ time.
Rainbow Jam Review
Using the product, my kids tried out two functions. First, the item could play individual music notes that coincided with the color that you press with the toy. For example, if you press the toy to red, it would let out a pitch that is different from if you press the toy to orange. To get the most out of this feature, I used the 16 page activity book that came with the product. The first page had an activity that showed why some colors have a pitch that is higher than others.
In the rest of the book, my daughter worked her way through the songs. Pressing each individual note was not easy, though. I had to press down on the item and hold it down until it made the sound. It wasn’t easy to fluently play a whole song at the rate you would play if you were using an actual instrument. However, the function worked well for teaching my daughter to match each individual pitch. The item taught my daughter to slow down and focus on hitting the pitch, rather than rushing through the song.
Another feature the item had was the musical function. When the item used its musical function, it played a song about the color that was pressed. At the end of the activity book, all of the songs’ lyrics were listed. Even though my daughter can’t read well yet, reading the songs’ lyrics would be useful for her when she gets older. The cool part of this feature was that both of my kids found it really engaging. Using this function was simple. The first time my daughter pressed the toy to a color, the item started the song.
During screen-free week when my family gave up television, both of my kids spent a lot of their free time dancing with the item. I really enjoyed watching my kids play with this product. Seeing my daughter’s face light up as she grinned and danced was priceless. The item had great educational value, and it was very entertaining. In the future, I will look forward to helping my daughter use the item for educational reasons, while also encouraging her to simply have fun with it as she plays.

Little kids love these kinds of toys. I’m glad to hear it was a huge hit in your home. I’m sure many parents would benefit from getting it for their little ones.
How neat. As a teacher I too see that music education is being cut over and over so I try to incorporate music at home whenever I can (I can’t carry a tune). Thanks for sharing!
How cute, she looks like she is having a blast. When my kids were younger I used music to help me teach them too, it seems to be more effective that way.

Aww, it looks like she had a blast. I love when kids discover new toys to play with.
That sounds like a toy that kids would surely enjoy. My son is too old to play with such toy though. That would be perfect for my youngest niece.
I’m with you regarding the cutbacks in arts (including music) in so many schools. It absolutely infuriates me and I wasn’t even a band kind of guy in school. There are so many studies showing how art and music helps kids develop that the decreasing emphasis in school seems almost criminal to me. This looks like a great way to introduce little kids to music.
This sounds like a fun toy. I bet all of my kids would get a kick out of it.
