Whether you love movies or simply have children who do, throwing an Oscar viewing party is a great way to bring the family together. If you want to throw the ultimate Oscar themed party the whole family will enjoy, you’re in the right place. From decorations to apparel, these tips will bring the magnificence of Hollywood into your home.
Tips For A Kid-Friendly Oscar Party
Since our family loves parties, we decided that we would turn our average Sunday night dinner into an extravagant Oscar themed party. In a few short hours, we were able to throw together a simple party centered around the children. Check out some tips that helped make this event a fabulous celebration.
Dress glamorously
Give your children a reason to wear their most glamorous clothes. When you attend the Oscars, you wear your best outfit. For a red carpet appearance, my children found Halloween costumes on sale at the party store. We selected two matching pink flapper dresses, some strands of pearls, and a fantastic boa. Not only were the outfits were adorable, but they also helped my children get in the spirit of a celebration.
Walk the red carpet before eating
Set up a red carpet for the children to walk in their costumes. If you don’t own a red carpet, you could use any long red cloth – from a table cloth to a blanket – but we bought a one that worked really well. Make sure that everyone walks down the red carpet before eating. You wouldn’t want food to get on the star’s designer clothes!
Prepare finger food
From deviled eggs to pigs in a blanket, children love food they can pick up to eat. You can make or buy guacamole, queso, wings, and pizza. With a simple menu, you can spend more time having fun and less time in the kitchen.
Of course, you should also have something delicious and sweet. We had a fantastic cheesecake for dessert.
Give out ballots
Each person can help come up with the categories for your ballots. As a family, we decided what categories would be on our ballots to include everyone. We voted on best food, best costumes, and best movie of the year. Since my daughter tallied the votes, she enjoyed having an important role during the activity.
Present the awards
Give out awards to all children who attend. With both of our children wearing the same costume, they both tied for best costume. Although we gave out award trophies that I found at the party store, you could easily come up with a creative alternative. Children could decorate paper towel rolls with gold and sparkles for a simple award craft.

Awww, it sounds like a fun Oscar party! I am not even sure my boys know what the Oscars are LOL. I should do this with them next year 🙂
That looks like so much fun! I would have loved this party. I have the perfect pink dress, too!
This is such a fun idea! My son likes to dress up for about 3 minutes, so maybe next year I can snap a few photos before he wriggles out of his bow tie!
This sounds so much fun, do your kiddos actually watch the oscars? It sounds like it was an eventful one this year.
I love this idea! I hardly watch any awards shows but now I want to just so I can do this with my daughter as I know she will love it!
Oh this is so cute.
I can see this happening in my future 🙂 thanks for the idea. Even makes for a great Feb baby birthday party.
Kids aren’t normally interested in the Oscars and it would be nice to make them more interested in films as well with this kind of party. I’m sure it’s a lot of fun for them! Thanks for the ideas!
I love the flapper dresses! I have never watched the oscars or even half the movies up for nomination. But it’s fabulous that you turn it into a fun family event!
I would have never thought to do an Oscar party for kids but this is so cute! How fun for them to dress up and get to walk the red carpet.
Your little ladies look so lovely – and so happy!! I love the idea of recreating an oscar party at home, must be so much fun:) X
This is so fun! My stepdaughter turned 11 in December and we had a Hollywood themed party. We’ve a movie room, so we did it all up and put a red carpet outside with stars and her cake was all movie themed. Kids always love the glamour. This is adorable. I love all the ideas here!
I’ve actually never watched the Oscars before! This is such a cute idea though.
What a cute party! My daughter would love these dress up outfits. Seriously it would make her day.
Your party looks wonderful! This looks like a blast for your family and a party my daughters would love to throw in our own home.
