5 Compelling Drama Movies I’m Looking Forward to in 2020

Now that the Academy Awards season has ended, it’s time to look ahead to the new, upcoming releases. Today’s focus on Theresa’s Reviews are compelling and intriguing dramas, which allow me to escape into the beautiful visuals, the costumes and stories of history films, as well as the intense emotional development of the characters. Check out the top 5 highly anticipated drama releases of the year.

Misbehaviour

Starring Keira Knightley, who I’ve always been a fan of, as well as Jessie Buckley and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Misbehavior shares the story of a group of women who plan a protest of the 1970 Miss World beauty competition in London. Check out the trailer below.

Based on a true story, this empowering movie could be an inspirational pick for parents aspiring to raise a fairer generation of young girls and boys.

The French Dispatch

Co-written and directed by Wes Anderson with his idiosyncratic signature style, The French Dispatch shares a collection of stories published in a newspaper in a fictional 20th century French city. Check out the trailer below.

Starring Elisabeth Moss, Timothee Chalamet, and Saoirse Ronan, the movie also features Bill Murray, Benicio del Toro, Owen Wilson and Adrien Brody. With inspiration drawn from Anderson’s love of The New Yorker, his stylistic trademarks help create cinematic beauty, while examining the life of journalists.

Bergman Island

Directed by French filmmaker Mia Hansen-Løve, Bergman Island is about a filmmaking couple who head to the island that inspired filmmaker Ingmar Bergman. Every summer, they visit to work on their screenplays. The film examines the lives of these two creative individuals as well as the space they need to find inspiration. As summer and their screenplays progress, the line between reality and fiction blurs. Although there isn’t a trailer released yet and the director is relatively unknown, I’m interested in seeing if there is an unexpected plot twist or if it is a fairly straightforward examination of a creative lifestyle. The movie stars Mia Wasikowska, Tim Roth, and Vicky Krieps.

Louis Wain

Directed by English actor and writer Will Sharpe, Louis Wain stars Aimee Lou Wood, Claire Foy, and Benedict Cumberpatch. This biographical story of the 19th century artist, who is known for his drawings of anthropomorphized large-eyed cats and kittens, could be interesting for its historical accuracy. With the 2019 spectacular box office failure of the movie Cats, I am unsure if movie theaters are ready for another movie with a focus on felines, but it looks worth checking out for the historical costumes and artistic nature of the main character.

Emma

Based on the novel by Jane Austen, Emma is a comedy drama directed by Autumn de Wilde, which stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Tanya Reynolds, and Josh O’Connor. With exquisite historical costumes, this looks promising for a visually stunning film with humor that keeps the classic story fresh and interesting. Check out the trailer below.
