Coco Movie Party Ideas
When I went to Disney Pixar’s Coco movie premiere party (read more here), the beautiful colors and festivities made the party come alive. I wanted to bring the same celebratory spirit to my movie night too. With these budget-friendly party planning ideas, you can enjoy your Coco movie party!
Make Marigold Cupcakes
You can make simple Marigold cupcakes! You don’t need to use real Marigold flowers to make this dessert. Although Marigold flowers are edible, they are hard to find.
Use Wilton Baking Cups Blossom in Yellow for the flower petals. For the orange color, carrot cake works well. Add three tablespoons of your cupcake mixture into each cupcake holder. Bake for an extra few minutes than usual. The thickness of the baking cups can make the mixture take longer to bake.
After adding cream cheese frosting, add gold accents. Buy Wilton Star Shaped Sprinkles in Gold and Wilton Sugar Sprinkles in Gold. Since Coco is going for gold with the Music (Original Song) nomination in the 2018 Academy Awards, this dessert works well for a kid-friendly movie themed 2018 Oscar Party too!
Create Marigold Flower Decorations
With tissue paper, you can create simple Marigold flower decorations. Cut a strip of paper in half lengthwise, and then cut it in half crosswise. Place the pieces on top of each other, and fold like an accordion. Place a green pipe cleaner in the middle. Pull the tissue paper out to make flower petals, and twist the pipe cleaner to make a flower stem.

Decorate Spirit Animals (DIY Alibrijes)
Children can enjoy decorating their spirit animals! These are called alibrijes, which are brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures. In the movie Coco, these animals come to life in the Land of the Dead.
Encourage children to make whatever type of animal they want! The more colorful, the better. Remember the feathers since these animals fly!
My children enjoyed making their alibrijes before we watched the movie! You can buy a Creatology Giant Jar of Crafts. Use popsicle sticks for legs, pom poms for the body, and foam balls for the head, or let children come up with their own ideas of how to use the craft supplies.
Additional Tips
- Have a talent show like the characters do in the movie. Have children do their best musical performances.
- For drinks, make hot cocoa (it’s a play on words!).
- Make authentic Mexican food. You could make tamales, which appear in the movie.
Coco comes out on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD and On-Demand on Tuesday, February 27, 2018! You can also check out our YouTube video Coco Family Move Night.
