If you are looking for a family friendly movie to watch this holiday season, head out to see Disney’s newest hit movie, “Mary Poppins Returns.” With this sequel to the 1964 classic “Mary Poppins,” you can enjoy an entirely new adventure with the Banks family and their incredible, magical nanny! With fantastic special effects that include some scenes with a combination of live action and animation, this movie is well worth bringing the family to see.
Mary Poppins Returns Sweeter Than Ever!
Emily Blunt plays a wonderful Mary Poppins with her classic magical umbrella, an eye for neatness, and a witty charm that helps the work get done. Lin-Manuel Miranda is also charming as Jack, who is reliably always there to help Mary Poppins and the Banks family. As the movie centers around the Banks children, Pixie Davies is Annabel, the responsible older sister. Nathanael Saleh is John, the well-intentioned older brother. Joel Dawson is Georgie, who accidentally gets into mischievous.
While this is a sequel to the 1964 film “Mary Poppins,” you don’t have to have seen the original to enjoy it. With adorable cartoon sequences, the story is great for young children, but it can also appeal to parents because of its live action scenes, dramatic family situations, as well as the warmth and happiness that Mary Poppins brings to each room and to the big screen.
Many fantastic, imaginative scenes take place in and near the Banks family home on Cherry Tree Lane in foggy London. Only someone as fantastic as Mary Poppins can turn a simple bath, a walk down the street, or a visit to the park into an adventure!
Although the movie centers around a family’s struggles to get by after the passing of a mother, the uplifting story shows that looking at things in a new way and believing in the impossible can help you overcome anything.
To make the movie appeal even more to all generations, Dick Van Dyke returns to the Mary Poppins sequel as Mr. Dawes, Jr., the retired chairman of the bank now run by Firth’s character.
The film also stars Ben Whishaw (“Spectre”) as Michael Banks, Emily Mortimer (“Hugo”) as Jane Banks, Julie Walters (“Harry Potter” films) as the Banks’ housekeeper Ellen, with Colin Firth (“The King’s Speech”) as Fidelity Fiduciary Bank’s William Weatherall Wilkins, and Meryl Streep (“Florence Foster Jenkins”) as Mary’s eccentric cousin, Topsy. Angela Lansbury appears as the Balloon Lady, a treasured character from the PL Travers books.
Directed by Rob Marshall (“Into the Woods,” “Chicago”), the movie is produced by John DeLuca, p.g.a., Rob Marshall, p.g.a. and Marc Platt, p.g.a. (“La La Land”) with Callum McDougall serving as executive producer.
The screenplay is by David Magee (“Life of Pi”) and the screen story is by Magee & Rob Marshall & John DeLuca (“Into the Woods”) based upon the Mary Poppins Stories by PL Travers. The music score is by Marc Shaiman (“Hairspray”) and the film features all new original songs with music by Shaiman and lyrics by Scott Wittman (“Smash”) and Shaiman.
“Mary Poppins Returns” releases in movie theaters on December 19, 2018.
