DIY ‘Wonder’ Movie Astronaut Helmet

In the movie (and book), Auggie Pullman is born with facial differences due to a craniofacial condition. He has a form of Treacher Collins syndrome, which affects the development of bones and tissues in the face.

As he enters a mainstream school for the first time in fifth grade, he wears an astronaut helmet. This hides him from the other students, who he worries will not accept him.

The helmet represents the desire for a safe space, while also showing the isolation he experiences.

Movie Synopsis

Based on the New York Times bestseller, Wonder tells the inspiring and heartwarming story of August Pullman.  Born with facial differences that, up until now, have prevented him from going to a mainstream school, Auggie becomes the most unlikely of heroes when he enters the local fifth grade. As his family, his new classmates, and the larger community all struggle to find their compassion and acceptance, Auggie’s extraordinary journey will unite them all and prove you can’t blend in when you were born to stand out.

Lionsgate presents, in association with Walden Media and Participant Media, a Mandeville Films / Lionsgate production.
