On my summer trip to Walt Disney World, a Disney employee at Art of Animation stumped the crowd of kids with a question about a nature movie that Disney had made. Everyone wanted to say the answer was Finding Nemo, but in fact, the answer was the movie Oceans. It’s fascinating how many incredible movies Walt Disney Pictures makes that are not your typical cartoon, feel-good kiddie flick. For a movie that adults as well as kids can enjoy, check out the latest Disney movie, Queen of Katwe.

Queen Of Katwe

Opening in theaters everywhere this Friday, September the 30th, Queen of Katwe shares an inspiring story. Whether you take the kids or head out for a date night, you will be able to enjoy the plot. Watching this movie will leave you thinking about how much everyone has the power to change their situation in life.

About The Movie

Set in rural Uganda, the movie is based on the true story of a young girl who is destined for more than she expected. When she discovers her incredible talent for chess, she receives life-changing support from her family as well as her community. I love that the message in the movie shows how when the people who surround you help instill you with confidence, your possibilities in life become much greater.

While watching young Phiona overcome all odds and become an international chess champion, you notice the idea that working hard pays off, which is a great message to send to kids, especially around the beginning of the school year. Since Phiona comes from an impoverished background and lives in the slum of Katwe, her ability to rise above is even more impressive. Not only does she become an excellent chess player, but she also learns to read and write so she can escape poverty and help her family secure a better future.

As a mom of two kids under age 7 and as an elementary school teacher, I would love to share this inspiring message, and I can’t wait to watch the movie soon!

Watch The Trailer

If you’re thinking of going to the movies this weekend, check out the trailer for Queen of Katwe first. The trailer helps brings the story to life!

Give Back With Soular Backpacks

If this movie leaves you wanting to make a greater difference in the world, consider how a simple shopping choice could provide for those in need. HSN is partnering with Soular Backpacks in a philanthropic effort. If you purchase a Soular Backpack here, the company will give one child in Africa a solar-powered backpack. Since children there are currently using kerosene lamps, they badly need a healthier alternative. With solar power, kids can avoid health complications and gain light during their daily walk to school.

My daughter Samantha has recently been asking me how she can help the poor. She wants to collect money for the poor and hand it to those who need it, but she’s confused about how to get in contact with people who are truly in need, since they don’t live near us. I’d love to share this movie with her and brainstorm of some ideas of how we can help change the world.

Do you every dream of making a bigger difference in the world? What is one way that you help those in need?

Sounds like a great movie. I love that Disney is always showcasing people like this so that others who don’t know about them can learn and see them first hand.

I want to take my babies to go see Queen Kawte- it sounds so good! My littles’ school has a sister school in Uganda, so I know they’ll love watching about a girl from Uganda. They collect school supplies for their sister school too, I’ll have to let the kids’ school know about Soular Backpacks. 🙂
    Thanks!

This is a good movie to teach kids about compassion, and aside from that it will also inspire them to follow their dreams and to never give up! I really love the concept of the movie and it’s definitely one that families must watch together.
