One of my favorite middle school memories would be when my eighth grade music teacher asked what we wanted our end-of-the-year musical to be. Inspired by an energetic STOMP video she had shown in class, I confidently raised my hand and suggested something different from the previous year’s 1960’s oldies music. Our class ended up doing our own version of STOMP, which is a livelier form of entertainment with everyday objects used as musical instruments. Kids used hockey sticks and lids to create musical rhythm, I had a speaking line, and the creativity involved made it a very memorable part of my childhood! Since STOMP is part of one of my favorite childhood memories, I’m excited that the STOMP show is coming to the National Theatre in Washington DC!
STOMP at The National Theatre Giveaway!
The show is hitting the stage April 23rd through April 28th! It is explosive, provocative, sophisticated, utterly unique and appeals to audiences of all ages.
With an eight-member troupe, they use everything but conventional percussion instruments – matchboxes, wooden poles, brooms, garbage cans, Zippo lighters, hubcaps – to fill the stage with magnificent rhythms. The return of the percussive hit also brings some new surprises, with some sections of the show now updated and restructured, utilizing props like tractor tire inner tubes and paint cans. As USA Today says, “STOMP finds beautiful noises in the strangest places.”
STOMP. See what all the noise is about.
Plan on a run time of approximately 95 minutes with no intermission. Children under the age of four are not permitted to attend the show.
As I think back about my favorite middle school memory, getting the freedom to give input into creative projects like a STOMP school musical might be why I ended up teaching middle school! This show is part of a memorable moment in my childhood, and it’s well worth checking out!
