As we head into the Christmas season, the excitement of the holidays brings much joy. With children having more free time than usual and much more energy than usual, having learning activities available can be helpful. One learning program that works well for my family is the IXL website and app. Recently I became an IXL Live Certified teacher, and I have found the content and design of the program to work well for individualized learning. Featured today on Theresa’s Reviews, you can learn about IXL and enter to win one family account!Learning with IXL over Winter Break & #Giveaway - Theresa's Reviews

My daughter is the biggest fan of IXL and has been since before preschool, when she would sneak onto her older sister’s school account and answer as many questions as she could. Later, we decided to get our own family account so each child could have their own experience using the website and app. Children can earn awards for their achievement and take a diagnostic test to learn which skills are recommended for them to complete.

One day this year, my daughter giggled as she asked me if she could go ahead and finish all the kindergarten skills on IXL. I thought she was just being silly, but it turns out she has really impressed her teacher this year! She is now working on subtraction in kindergarten and other math skills that are not usually covered until first grade.

One reason to use IXL over winter break is that the Social Studies content connects with the holiday season. Children can learn about Christmas, Hanukkah, and other cultural celebrations with age-appropriate questions and easy-to-understand explanations.

Even though Christmas is widely celebrated around the world, not all children understand the reason it is celebrated or where many of the traditions come from, such as St. Nicholas and the belief in Jesus Christ being born on Christmas. With questions that describe the beliefs behind the holiday, this skill is a good one to cover over winter break.
