Now that it’s beginning to feel more like fall, I’m happy to put out festive decorations! I made a special occasion out of the new season by throwing a Back to School Wizard Party to celebrate my daughters completing their first week of in-person school. Check out all my fun finds featured in the Enjoying Family Life Halloween Gift Guide 2021!

For the decorations, I shopped the Riles and Bash Magic Wizard School Collection. The balloon arch kit comes with balloons of different sizes and colors, a decorating strip to secure them, glue dots to fill in empty spaces, and ribbon for hanging the arch. It also comes with a brick wall backdrop.
You can buy the Owl Pinata separately or as part of the kit. Although I used it as tabletop decor, filling it with candy and using it as an activity would be a fun idea if you’re spending Halloween at home or with a small group this year.
Our Back to Wizard School party had a few educational items since we were celebrating learning.
Traveling back in time can show how haunting history can be. With the Historic Cartoons Bamboo Keepsake Box, you get 50 cards that share political cartoons along with descriptions on the back.
Another history-inspired gift idea is History by Mail. Each month you receive replicas of historical documents.
These both make interesting gifts, while they could also become a game by discussing what you think each one is about and then revealing more information about it, or you could use them to help design a ghosts of war-themed escape room.
Reading spooky books together is another nice activity! One dark middle grades novel worth checking out is the Spark series. In Spark and the Grand Sleuth and its sequel Spark and the League of Ursus, the story follows Spark, a cute, cuddly teddy bear who joins together with the other toys to defend her human owner and their town.
Another middle grades book with a festive, spooky, Halloween spirit is Warren the 13th. It’s a science fiction / fantasy action-packed adventure that follows Warren, a bellhop, valet, groundskeeper, and errand boy of his family’s ancient hotel, which has a mysterious side of its own.
While you’re setting up for fall, you can add in some festive Halloween decor too. Make sure to hang up some adorable Halloween gnome art and a magnetic Halloween Advent Calendar that you can personalize with a message or name.
My favorite thing about throwing a Back to Wizard School party is that this works anytime from the first day of school through Halloween. Whether you choose to design a similar party set-up in place of trick-or-treating this year, or if you are like me and want to surprise the kids just to tell them you’re proud of how they’re doing in school so far, these items help make it a special, memorable occasion!
