Yesterday, my children’s school announced that it was closing down for two weeks due to coronavirus. With the anxiety-inducing news that this illness is rapidly spreading, I am preparing to stay home as much as possible during this time. I hope to make the best of the situation. I’m picturing home cooked, made-from-scratch meals and enjoying the most fulfilling moments of motherhood. However, making lifestyle changes can be a stressful experience. To overcome this stress, my solution is to watch these three light-hearted shows, which are all about reclaiming power in some way, much as we will all need to overcome feeling powerless as we face this pandemic.

3 Shows to Binge-Watch During a Pandemic

Good Girls

In a quiet suburban neighborhood, three mothers face desperate times. They decide to risk everything, including their marriage, their lives, and their ethics, in order to take back control of their lives again. As a new life of crime pays off and gives them newfound freedom, they can’t imagine going back to their old lifestyles as a fast food worker, grocery store cashier, and stay-at-home mother. With every dollar earned, they find themselves more deeply entangled in corrupt financial dealings that always leave them wanting more.

The Bold Type

Inspired by the life of Cosmopolitan editor in chief Joanna Coles, The Bold Type shows the glamorous lives of the women responsible for writing, photographing, styling, and Tweeting at a global women’s magazine in New York City. They struggle to find ideal romantic relationships, and they discover their true identities, while they develop the perfect pitch concepts for meetings with their boss. With plenty of light-hearted moments, the characters usually find success after their struggles, which makes this a fantastic choice for a stressful time.

Schitt’s Creek

When the wealthy Rose family suddenly find themselves broke, wealthy and influential video-store entrepreneur Johnny Rose moves his family to Schitt’s Creek. They leave their pampered lifestyle behind and explore their true callings, while discovering that lives are much different in small-town America. Although the show doesn’t have much depth or drama, it is an amusing, entertaining choice for binge-watching that can lead to some chuckles here and there.
