Looking for a neat birthday gift for kids? While trying to find a gift for my daughter’s second birthday, I came across the Bean Bag Toss game from Educational Insights. The toy was a huge hit with both of my kids. One of the coolest features was that you could flip it to two different sides to create a whole new game. It came with three bean bags. Since both of my kids loved the game, I also used it at my older daughter’s fifth birthday party.

Developmentally, the toy was great for my younger daughter. The game got Georgie thinking about using her motor skills to throw items. She didn’t understand yet how to throw the bean bags from a distance, but as a certified K-6 teacher, I liked that the product would grow with her. In a couple years, the item would still be something she could play with.

My older daughter Sammie also loved playing with the game. She came up with rules for the game. Each player had to throw the bags from the same point. With the castle side of the game, the number next to the hole was the amount of points the person would receive. When she played with the animal side of the game, she tried to match the color of the beanbag with the color of the animal to get a point. Although the game only came with three bean bags, matching the colors worked pretty well and would work even better with additional bean bags from the company.

By the end of Georgie’s birthday party, both girls were playing together with the game. One silly rule that they made up was that both players had to lay on the floor and throw the bean bags backwards over their heads. I liked seeing both girls playing together happily with a game that was age appropriate for both of them. Everybody in the family enjoyed playing it.

Since the game was such a hit, I left it out in the playroom at my older daughter’s fifth birthday. All of the kids naturally gravitated to the game. It was one of the most fun things they had to play with there. Instead of organizing an actual game, I just let the kids play independently. My daughter loved showing everyone the toy.
